An autism psychologist offers ongoing, neuro-affirming therapy for autistic people, adapted to your sensory and communication needs, with or without a formal diagnosis. We see autistic children, teens and adults in Salisbury, Seacliff or by telehealth, with Medicare, NDIS or private funding.

How can a psychologist support an autistic person?
Being autistic isn’t something to fix. Therapy at CHSA starts from what you or your child want to be easier, and adapts to how you communicate and experience the world, including your sensory needs.
Sensory overload and overwhelm
You might say: Overwhelm and sensory overload
Busy, loud or unpredictable places can leave you drained or shut down. Your psychologist works with you to notice what builds up, make sense of it and plan supports that fit your sensory needs.
Anxiety, worry and low mood
Many autistic people also carry anxiety or low mood, often from years of trying to keep up. Your psychologist helps you understand what sits underneath and builds coping strategies together. Our psychologists draw on approaches such as CBT and ACT, adapted to the person.
You might say: Getting my needs and feelings across
Putting feelings into words, or explaining what you need, can be hard. Your psychologist works with the way you communicate. Alexandra uses visual resources, such as pictures, to understand what someone needs and to help them express themselves.
Routines, change and daily life
You might say: Routines and change
Unexpected changes can be stressful, and routines can help life feel steadier. Your psychologist can build visual routines and plans with you or your child, at your own pace.
Support for children and teens
You might say: My child is struggling at school or home
Home and school can ask a lot of a child. Our psychologists support autistic children and teens, work with parents and carers, and can share strategies with your family. Our paediatric OTs can also work alongside on sensory needs and everyday skills.
You might say: Just found out I’m autistic as an adult
Finding out later can bring relief, grief and many questions about the past. Your psychologist gives you space to make sense of it and decide what support you want next.
Not sure yet? Start with support
You might say: I think I might be autistic
You don’t need a diagnosis to start getting support for what’s hard now. If you’d like a formal answer, our assessment psychologist assesses autism from age 3 to 60.
Our team talks through what’s going on and lets you know who is available and how long the wait is. This call is free.
Your first appointment
Your psychologist gets to know you, what’s hard right now and what you’d like to change. Goals are set together, and sessions are adapted to your sensory and communication needs. Your first session is about an hour (50 minutes plus 10 minutes of notes). For NDIS it can run up to 90 minutes, because we go through your plan and goals.
Ongoing support
Regular sessions built around your goals, with links to OT or an autism assessment if they’d help.

Fees as listed on our fees and funding page. The session fee is the same for private, Medicare and NDIS clients, and it is the 2026–27 NDIS price limit for psychologists. We don’t bulk bill. Our psychologists are general psychologists, so the Medicare rebate is $101.55 (item 80110, from 1 July 2026), which leaves a gap of $151.44.1 The rebate changes each 1 July.
Ways to pay
Private
No referral needed. Book directly and pay per session. With private health insurance, you pay in full at your session and claim back from your insurer; most funds let you claim through their app, depending on your cover. We don’t process claims on the day.
Medicare
Ask your GP whether a Mental Health Treatment Plan is right for you and for a referral to us. Under Better Access you can claim a rebate for up to 10 individual sessions each calendar year: the first course is up to 6 sessions, then your GP reviews your plan and refers you for the rest.2 You pay the gap between our fee and the rebate.
NDIS
Psychology (therapy) funding in your plan, then an online referral. We accept plan-managed, self-managed and NDIA-managed plans. We don’t ask for a diagnosis or a GP letter: share what you’re comfortable with, because it helps us plan with you.
Which psychologists can you see for autism support?
Our psychologists provide ongoing therapy for autistic people, adapted to sensory and communication needs. Our assessment psychologist, Ann Parker, assesses autism from age 3 to 60 but doesn’t provide therapy. Ask us about current availability for new therapy clients.
Do I need a diagnosis to see a psychologist about autism?
No. You can see a psychologist about what’s hard for you or your child whether or not autism has been formally identified. If you’d like a formal answer, our assessment psychologist assesses autism from age 3 to 60 on our autism assessment page.
What is neuro-affirming therapy for autistic people?
Neuro-affirming therapy accepts that autistic people think and experience the world differently, rather than treating that as something to correct. Our psychologists adapt sessions to sensory and communication needs, for example by using visual resources, and set goals with you.
Who can diagnose autism in Adelaide?
Autism is identified through a comprehensive assessment by qualified practitioners, following Australia’s national guideline, which is approved by the NHMRC.3 At CHSA, our assessment psychologist assesses autism from age 3 to 60. Assessments are separate from the therapy on this page, and our assessment page explains what’s involved and the fees.
Can the NDIS fund autism therapy?
NDIS access and funding are assessed person by person, and a diagnosis on its own doesn’t decide it. If psychology is already funded in your NDIS plan, you can use it here. We accept plan-managed, self-managed and NDIA-managed plans.
Do you offer autism therapy for children and adults?
Yes. Our psychologists support autistic children, teens and adults in clinic or by telehealth. Ask us about current availability, and our team will talk you through your options on the free first call.
